Chrissy was already bored with the food. Wasn’t that always the way with buffets? Everything looked so good at first, but then halfway through your second plate of boiled rice and beef stew, things just tasted… icky.

She was worried about Sim. Something was up with him lately, and her only assumption was that it had to do with his mother’s death. The ten year anniversary was only weeks away, and she knew it was playing on his mind. He had no other immediate family besides a distant auntie and a senile old grandmother.

And me. He has me.

When Chrissy had first met Sim, he’d been a loner. A shared passion for horror had brought them together at a convention, but once they started dating, she had been shocked by how quiet his existence had been. He held a job with a sandwich packing company, standing on an assembly line eight hours a day for minimum wage. His home was a single-bedroom flat in a rough part of town, with his only friends being the people he sometimes gamed with online. It had been as though he’d been afraid to live in the real world – the world that required effort and interaction. Yet, somehow, even in those first days, she had sensed a kind, loving, and loyal human being. She’d been right.

But lately, Sim was drifting away from her. Increasingly, he was quiet. Perhaps just thoughtful, but then she wouldn’t know because he rarely shared what was going on inside his head. She could count the number of times he smiled in a day on one hand. Was he depressed?

And if so, how do I help him?

She had hoped this weekend might get him excited again. A new adventure for them both. Meeting Evers Nealy had been surreal, and there was an atmosphere around the guy that just made you think your entire world was about to change. But Sim had done nothing but pout since arriving on the island. It had actually made her a little mad, and reminded her of her father’s moodiness that had no doubt led to her parents divorcing when she had been twelve.

Are we headed the same way? I keep trying to get him to open up, but what if he just never does?

She told herself to lighten up on him. This island was enough to make anyone glum. It was one thing to make documentaries about serial killers, but a whole other thing to actually meet them. She still couldn’t believe it. Sidwell, The Huntsman, and all the others she’d seen so far… It was insane. And frightening.

Chrissy had been chaperoned from the cell block to the cafeteria, and food had already been waiting. She had dived in with gusto.

Now she put down her knife and fork, fuller than she’d intended to be.

Oh, who am I fooling? I’ve never left a buffet without wanting to be sick. That’s the whole point!

The orderly noticed she was done and gave her a nod. He said nothing, so she assumed she could remain at the table while the others completed the tour.
